HARNESS TRAINING TIPS
Walking your cat will stimulate their senses and eliminate boredom. It will keep them healthy & help boost their growth and development. Even just getting your cat outside in the garden will boost their wellbeing and mood.
First time owners of Dragonfly Harnesses must allow for the cat to get used to wearing their new harness in the safety of their own home first to ensure that they are comfortable with it. They may flop down on their side and not move, they may walk with an arched back, stiff legs or other unnatural posture for a little bit. This is not uncommon and should not cause concern - it is merely your cat feeling out the unfamiliar and deciding how they feel about it.
Tip 1- Show your cat the harness and occasionally drape it over their body. Take it off if they get upset.
Tip 2- Attach the harness and let your cat wear it for a few minutes at a time (or only a few seconds if they object). Expect agitation, lying on their side and refusal to move at first.
Tip 3 - Treats for each small accomplishment can only help! Keep calm, it may be a process!
Tip 4 - When they seem comfortable, adjust the harness for a safe fit. You should be able to fit one fingers between the body and the harness.
Tip 5 Attach the leash and hold it loosely while you follow kitty around your home. They might (or might not) agree to let you choose your direction of travel.
Tip 6 - Repeat the above step until you think they are ready to see the wider world, then pick kitty up, open the door, hold kitty in your arms and let them look around.
Tip 7 - If kitty is calm, take a few steps outside. ALWAYS carry your cat outside so they don’t start thinking an open door means they are free to leave the building. Bring kitty back inside. Reward with treats. Repeat until comfortable.
Tip 8 - Carry kitty outside, place on the ground and keep a firm grasp on the leash. Let them choose the itinerary. Do they want to lie in the grass or check out an alley? Let them decide (within reason, of course). Abort the mission when kitty says it’s over. Reward with treats.
Tip 9 - Try taking your cat out at different times of day. They might balk when it’s bright and busy but relax when the outdoors is darker and quieter. Find what works for your feline friend and follow their lead!
